Hotels' marketing mix responses at insecurity-stricken destinations: a study in the US–Mexico border

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to investigate specific marketing mix activities and influencing factors in hotels coping with falling room demand derived from drug cartel-related risk insecurity. Design/methodology/approach A case study research was carried out using semistructured interviews key informants (hotel managers) two neighboring destinations at the US–Mexico border, an area where criminal organizations' trafficking-related violence has impacted hospitality industry. Findings identifies that are internal (market segment diversification, type ownership, magnitude investments) external (tourism promotion organizations, media coverage, tourist flow volume) firms as they affect their implementation. Research limitations/implications developed a framework better understand use practices insecurity contexts, which could be further studied other conflict scenarios. Practical implications pricing communication tactics employed more intensively, while product-service distribution channel actions used lesser extent. Greater emphasis should placed on product-service, market diversification. Social Considering positive impacts tourism businesses have local communities, it recommended hotel sector works together government industry associations improve safety security destinations. Originality/value extends extant knowledge crisis management by investigating full stricken organized crime, understudied context literature.
